Jeep Super Wagoneer 1966

Empire blue

HEMI 392 / 6-speed automatic / 4WD / Dana 60-44

Sold

The 1966 Jeep Super Wagoneer by Vigilante4x4 is described as an incredibly special and rare vehicle, produced for only about two years. It's considered the first luxury SUV, paving the way for the expansion of high-end 4x4s.

The goal of this build was to combine vintage aesthetics (a metal dashboard that "screams the 60s," miles of chrome, and gorgeous pastel colors) with modern drivability and suspension.

Key points of the build:

  • Engine and Performance: It's equipped with an SRT8 engine, providing significant power. Larger wheels and more powerful brakes were necessary for safety to handle the modern engine.

  • 3D Innovation: 3D printing technology was essential for integrating modern features while preserving the period design language.

    • The center console—a major feature of the Super Wagoneer—was 3D printed to integrate a manual transmission, which this model did not originally have, while maintaining the 1960s look. It also contains ducts for the rear air conditioning.

    • The old warning lights were converted into functional buttons (3D printed with the original font) for the emergency brake and the tailgate window control.

  • Modernized Interior: The instrument cluster was updated to support the SRT8 engine. The radio keeps its "old school" push buttons but has Bluetooth functionality.

  • Aesthetics: The model uses a chain mail effect surrounded by chrome instead of wood paneling. The wheels and spinners, carved from large blocks of aluminum, give the impression of turning back time when the vehicle is in motion.

Motorization

The objective of VIGILANTE is to offer engines that are much more performant than the original ones (the carburated 5.9 Liter 8 cylinder or inline 6 engines). The goal is to get as much reliability and power as the high-end Sport SUVs that are currently found in todays market .

Axles

The axles are the last part of the kinetic chain, and we wanted axles in accordance with Jeep’s legacy for our VIGILANTE line. The obvious choice for us are the DANA 60 and DANA 44 type from Currie Enterprises: these new axles are the standard of reference in the axles’ market for both their sturdiness and their reliability.

Long travel suspension and powerful brakes.

EIBACH coils and adjustable FOX RACING 2.0 shock absorbers have replaced the original leaf springs suspension used on Full-Size Jeeps.

More acceleration requires more braking power. The drum/disc combination originally found on Grand Wagoneers was functional but completey outdated. That’s why we replaced it with four huge slotted/drilled/vented discs that can withstand high temperatures. The firm grip is provided by BAER 6-piston calipers. This combination is installed on all VIGILANTE Jeeps.
